MSC Certified
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organization that sets sustainable fishing and seafood traceability standards. The MSC certification is a globally recognized ecolabel awarded to wild-capture fisheries that meet rigorous environmental and sustainable fishing standards.
To be certified as sustainable by the MSC, a fishery must meet three core principles:
- Sustainable fish stocks: The fishery must demonstrate that the target fish stocks are being caught at sustainable levels and that fishing practices do not negatively impact other marine species or the broader ecosystem.
- Effective management: The fishery must be effectively managed to ensure that it is sustainable in the long term, with measures in place to prevent overfishing and protect the marine environment.
- Responsible fishing practices: The fishery must use methods that minimize bycatch, protect the marine environment, and comply with relevant laws and regulations.
Fisheries that meet these criteria are awarded MSC certification, which allows them to use the MSC ecolabel on their products. This label helps consumers to make an informed choice about the sustainability of the seafood they purchase. The MSC certification process is independent, and the standard is regularly reviewed and updated to ensure it remains at the forefront of sustainable fishing practices.
Therefore, MSC certification allows the fishing industry to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable practices and for consumers to identify and choose seafood from sustainable sources.
